Superintendent's Message

This is Wyatt, who joined many of his classmates at the WDPS science fair this week.  His project was quite electrifying! Congrats to all of our little scientists!

So Much To Be Proud of at HF!!

We had another incredible week that was bookended with amazing theatrical performances at OMS last weekend and Harborfields High School this week.  The Harborfields High School Theatre Company’s rendition of Mean Girls was spectacular. I could not help but wonder how the show could be any better between the flawless singing and acting, the brilliant choreography, the wonderful accompaniment of our pit orchestra, and the superb support of the stage, lighting, and sound crews.

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of Mean Girls!

As we flip the page on the calendar to April, we see that there seems to be a school event each night. I am personally looking forward to joining our families at all of our events as we celebrate the achievements of our students under the guidance and support of our amazing staff. I hope to see you at all of our school events!

Congratulations - SCOPE Service Awards

I am pleased to share that three outstanding educators were recognized for their service to our students, staff, and community at the SCOPE Service Award Ceremony this past Monday.

Please join me in congratulating our Outstanding Administrator Service Award winners, Dr. Danielle Delorenzo and Ms. Denise Campbell, and our Outstanding Board Service Award winner, Ms. Susan Broderick.  Please take a moment to click on the picture below to read more about the contributions and accomplishments of our award recipients!

BOE Spotlight - Artificial Intelligence In The Classroom

As part of my Superintendent’s Report at each Board of Education meeting, I provide a spotlight on various school programs throughout the district.  At our March meeting, I provided an opportunity to spotlight some of the work the district is doing to incorporate artificial intelligence into the curriculum at all levels. While A.I. in education is relatively new, Harborfields remains committed to innovation and providing our students with the ever-evolving skills they need to succeed in school and in the workforce.

In this brief spotlight, the district’s Director of Technology and Security Systems, Ms. Karpenske, and TJL’s enrichment teacher, Ms. Scarth, provide a glimpse into a student-facing A.I. software provided through the district’s coding platform, KidOYO.  Please take a moment to watch our March Spotlight linked below.

HF Shark Tank - Entrepreneurship in Action

Did you know that Harborfields students can complete a NY State Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway in Entrepreneurship?  This week, groups of students entered the Shark Tank to pitch innovative business ideas with confidence, creativity, and poise. These young entrepreneurs-in-the-making created a mock business, conducted market research, crafted persuasive presentations, and tackled tough questions from the panel of sharks, which included business owners from the district’s Career Readiness Network. In the end, they brokered the best deals possible for their imaginative startups. These students proved that the future of business is bright!

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

Walking into Ms. Rottkamp's classroom and seeing Spring Media Day in action was truly incredible. What was most inspiring was that this was a completely student-run event.  Students from our digital photography class joined with students from our fashion program and journalism classes to bring our second Media Day to life! Athletes posing on different backdrops, students collaborating to perfect each shot, and others conducting interviews and filming promotional material. I can't thank our teachers and students enough for their dedication to capturing the Tornado spirit. It was an amazing day, and I can't wait to see the result of your hard work.

Oldfield Middle School

One of the goals within the Harborfields Strategic Plan is to enhance real-world learning experiences through project-based learning (PBL).  PBL assignments provide students with opportunities to collaborate, communicate, and think critically.  This week, students in Dr. Zenyuh's class worked together on a PBL project for their Patricia Palacco Unit. They created review games in a variety of modalities, including online games they coded themselves, traditional board games, and more.  Click on the picture below to see more PBL work in action!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

This week was Innovation Week at TJL, where students were encouraged to explore, create, and innovate in out-of-this-world ways! Classes visited the Makerspace, where they had their choice of space-themed innovation challenges, all guided by the Engineering Design Process and blending creativity with coding. Our students worked together to solve problems and had fun along the way.

Washington Drive Primary School

Last week at Washington Drive, more classes participated in a Kids Connect assembly! During this time, students gathered in talking circles with peers from different classes. The goal? To foster connections through inclusivity and understanding while enhancing communication skills. There have only been a few sessions this school year, but the impact is already visible with a more united and supportive school community. Keep up the great work!
